It’s a great honor that the Swiss Laboratory Animal Science Association has invited Dr. Michael Pellizzon, Science Director of Research Diets, Inc., to present in their 2021 Annual Meeting. Dr. Pellizzon will introduce to the audience the difference that distinguishes the purified-ingredient diet from grain-based diets. Dr. Pellizzon will also advise the researchers on the importance of choosing the diets in the microbiome study as the composition of the diets can result in the change of gut and directly impact the gut microbiome. In case you were not aware, Dr. Michael Pellizzon and Dr. Matthew Ricci, scientists at Research Diets, Inc. published an article in 2018 that aimed to untangle the influence of the types of diets on gut health and structure by comparing animals fed with purified-ingredient diets to those with the chow diets (grain-based diets). They had observed that different types of fibers – soluble or insoluble can affect the mass of the cecum and colon of the studied animals. With the soluble fibers incorporated, purified diets can prompt the two abovementioned organs to develop similarly to those fed with grain-based diets. However, although similar in the mass of these two organs, compared to the grain-based diets, purified diets with soluble fibers will still trigger a microbiome population that is distinct to grain-based diets. Grain-based diets usually contain variable kinds and amounts of fibers, which may lead to variable microbiota composition and other factors related to gut health.


That being said, with grain-based diets frequently used as controls (which are normally closed formulas), it's important to note that the nature of grain-based diets, blended with unknown contaminants (both synthetic and natural) and variable nutrients by batches, may introduce confounding effects to the experiment and render low reproducibility. In contrast, the benefit of using a purified ingredient diet, which is due to them having 'open' formulas and ingredients which contain one main nutrient, OpenSource formulas can help the researchers in reporting, repeating, and revising their experiments.
