OpenSource Diets...Report, Repeat and Revise
Diet Induced Obesity (DIO) Diets

The use of open source diets for studies
of obesity and diabetes allows the
researcher to test the effects of specific
diet constituents on the genesis and
progression of these related diseases.
For example, it has been well-
documented that both the amount and
type of dietary fat and carbohydrates

can have pronounced effects on body adiposity and parameters
of glucose metabolism.

Pelleted Diets up to 60 kcal% fat

Research Diets has pioneered and developed proprietary methods for pelleting open source,
high fat diets for laboratory animals. We can formulate and pellet diets with up to 60 kcal%
fat, containing varying types of fats and carbohydrates. It has been our long standing practice to
work side by side with the researcher to formulate diets that will meet their needs. The "Original High Fat" diets being used in diet induced obesity studies are the D12450B, D12451, & D12492 DIO series.

D12450B - 10 kcal % Fat - DIO (LFD) Control Diet
D12451 - 45 kcal % Fat- DIO (HFD)
D12492 - 60 kcal % Fat- DIO (VHFD)

These same DIO diets are used by the top commercial breeders who are providing DIO mice and rats to the research community. See JAX Diet Induced Obesity (DIO) Services.

D12451 and D12492 have been used to induce obesity in Charles River Laboratories C57BL/6 mice.
Diet # D12451 and D12492 have been used to induce obesity in Charles River Laboratories CD rats.
